Germany considers export restrictions to China

German Minister of Economy and Climate Protection Robert Habeck announced that Germany is evaluating export restrictions to China in the field of technology. In an interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper, German Minister of Economy and Climate Protection Robert Habeck stated that his country should become less economically dependent on China. Habeck reported that he evaluates Germany’s export restrictions to China as similar to the US restrictions on chip exports to Beijing, emphasizing that Germany should not lose its technological leadership. “Export controls should not be everywhere, but we should be stricter in some critical sectors,” Habeck said. Stating that it is not possible to simply remove telecom products manufactured by Chinese company Huawei from Germany’s 5G network, Habeck said, “But we should avoid this in the future.” Habeck stated that the US is openly subsidizing its industry and pushing it towards climate protection, and that they are working to prevent German industry from migrating to other countries.
