Musk's logic behind the waterproof function is that the Cybertruck should be able to travel from Starbase, a SpaceX facility in Boca Chica, Texas, to South Padre Island, which requires crossing the channel. Tesla first introduced the Cybertruck in November 2019. Consumers had a mixed reaction to the Cybertruck, with some hailing it as a triumph, while others were highly critical of its size and design. Even the harshest criticism couldn't stop thousands of people from dropping the $100,000 pre-order fee for the truck. At the time, Musk said production would begin in late 2021. A three-motor AWD version was expected to go into production in late 2022. None have been built yet. While prototypes have been seen publicly since 2019, details are scant and production has been delayed repeatedly. Musk said during Tesla’s second-quarter earnings call in July that the Cybertruck would go into production in mid-2023.
