Jeremy Hunt: Food inflation is worryingly high

British Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt stated that although inflation fell to 8.7 percent in April, food inflation remained “worryingly” high. In his assessment of the inflation data announced today, Hunt stated that they were on the right track to reduce inflation but that complacency should not be taken. Noting that inflation fell to 8.7 percent in April and that this was the lowest level in more than a year, Hunt said, “There is still work to be done, especially in food prices. Food prices are still rising rapidly and food inflation is worryingly high.” Hunt stated that the government has a clear plan to cut inflation in half. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, in a video he shared on his Twitter account, reminded that he promised to cut inflation in half when he took office, and said, “Today, we received encouraging news that inflation is falling, but inflation is still very high. Today’s data shows that the plan is working, although there is still a lot of work to be done.” According to data from the British Office for National Statistics, annual inflation in the UK fell less than expected in April to 8.7 percent. Inflation was 10.1 percent in March. Food inflation, which reached its highest level in the last 45 years at 19.2 percent in March, slowed slightly in April and fell to 19.1 percent.
