China cancels EU High Representative Borrell's visit to Beijing

China has cancelled next week’s visit to Beijing by the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Nabila Massrali, a spokesperson for the EU Commission, said in a statement that they had been informed by China that Borrell’s visit “can no longer be held on July 10 and that alternatives should be sought.” In a statement on July 2, EU Ambassador to Beijing Jorge Toledo announced that Borrell would visit Beijing on July 10. Toledo had said that Borrell would meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Chin Gang and other senior officials on various issues including the Russia-Ukraine War, human rights and trade. EU High Representative Borrell had postponed his visit to China from April 13-15 because he contracted COVID-19.
