Qatar seeks 20-year deal to supply LNG to Europe

Europe, which wants to reduce its dependence on Russia for fossil fuels and has turned to Qatar, the world’s largest LNG producer, has been faced with the condition that Qatar sign a long-term agreement. According to information provided to Bloomberg News by sources familiar with the matter, Qatar wants a 20-year agreement with European countries for LNG. However, European governments emphasize that a shorter-term agreement should be made, citing the need to reduce carbon emissions. Sources say that Germany signing a 20-year agreement to purchase LNG from the US has led Qatar to come with the same demand. Europe, on the other hand, has stated that Qatar’s conditions are very strict and that, unlike the agreement with the US, it has given the Europeans very little leeway in directing LNG purchases elsewhere.
