WTO's steel decision against Türkiye

The World Trade Organization has ruled against Turkey in a steel tariff dispute with the United States. The World Trade Organization (WTO) found the additional duties that Turkey implemented in retaliation for the US’s steel and aluminum tariffs to be “inconsistent” with the organization’s policies and decided that Turkey should remove the duties. The report published by the WTO’s dispute resolution body said, “The panel recommends that Turkey bring its WTO-incompatible measure into compliance with its obligations.” Turkey retaliated after the US imposed a 25 percent tariff on steel and 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports in March 2018 based on its national security review, known as “Article 232,” on steel and aluminum imports under Donald Trump’s administration. The US has initiated a dispute resolution process against Turkey, as well as the European Union, Canada, Russia, and other countries for the measures they implemented in retaliation.
