Tesla's layoff plan includes US and China

Tesla’s global layoff plan includes sales, technology and engineering in the automaker’s two biggest markets, the United States and China, according to five sources with knowledge of the matter. Tesla CEO Elon Musk told staff on Monday in an internal memo seen by Reuters that the company was laying off more than 10% of its global workforce as the company grapples with falling sales and an intensifying price war for electric vehicles. One of the sources said the layoffs were effective immediately at several U.S. service centers, primarily sales staff and technicians. Another location also laid off all public-facing staff. Two of the sources said Tesla had been informed that members of its China sales team were being laid off and that more than 10% had lost their jobs. Tesla, the world's largest automaker by market value, has 140,473 employees worldwide as of December 2023, according to its annual report. On the other hand, the company is expected to lay off approximately 15,000 employees. On the other hand, Tesla laid off 4 percent of its employees in New York in February last year.
