China wants EU to cancel tariffs on electric vehicles

China wants the EU to lift tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports by July 4. Beijing wants the European Union to lift preliminary tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles by July 4, according to China’s state-run Global Times newspaper. The temporary EU tariffs of up to 38.1 percent on Chinese-made electric vehicles are set to begin on July 4. Meanwhile, the bloc is investigating allegations that the EU is excessively and unfairly subsidizing Chinese electric vehicle makers. China has repeatedly called on the EU to lift its tariffs and expressed its willingness to negotiate. Beijing, still upset by U.S. tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, does not want to be embroiled in another tariff war, but has said it will take every step to protect Chinese firms if that happens. The two sides agreed to resume tariff talks after EU Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis and Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao met on Saturday during a visit to China by Germany’s economy minister. Wentao said the doors for discussion were "open."
