Amazon to make largest layoffs in history

Amazon is planning to lay off more than 18,000 people, admitting it hired too quickly during the pandemic. Amazon said Wednesday that it would lay off more than 18,000 people, the most in the company’s history. “We typically wait to communicate about these consequences until we can speak to the people who are directly affected,” CEO Andy Jassy said in a note on the company’s blog. “However, since one of our team members leaked this information, we decided it was better to share this news sooner so you can hear the details directly from me.” Tech companies have been preparing for the possibility of a recession for some time now. Both Amazon and Salesforce have admitted to hiring too quickly during the pandemic. Amazon specifically acknowledged that it added workers to its warehouses too quickly as consumers shifted to online ordering. The company hired 1.54 million people at the end of the third quarter.
