EU to provide 500 million euros in aid to Pakistan

European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that they will provide 500 million euros of aid to Pakistan, which experienced floods last year. In a video message she sent to the international conference titled "Climate Resilient Pakistan" hosted by the United Nations and Pakistan in Geneva, Switzerland, EU Commission President Von der Leyen reminded that Pakistan experienced one of the world's largest natural disasters. Stating that the Pakistani people need assistance, von der Leyen announced that they will provide 500 million euros of support for Pakistan's reconstruction and humanitarian aid. Von der Leyen said that the EU and Pakistan recently agreed on an 87 million euro package within the scope of economic cooperation projects, and that the EU's humanitarian aid has increased to 172 million euros. Approximately 1,740 people lost their lives and more than 12,000 people were injured due to the floods in Pakistan in the summer of 2022. It was announced that the damage caused by the floods, which affected more than 33 million people across the country, exceeded 30 billion dollars. It is stated that 16 billion dollars are needed for the long-term recovery and reconstruction of the country.
