Ghana becomes Africa's largest gold producer again

The West African country of Ghana has once again become the continent’s largest gold producer, with a 32 percent increase in gold production last year. Ghana Chamber of Mines President Joshua Mortoti said in a statement that gold production by both large and small and medium-sized companies has increased significantly in 2022. Mortoti noted that the country’s gold production increased from 2.8 million ounces the previous year to 3.7 million ounces (105 tons) last year. Stating that this increase was mostly driven by large-scale companies, Mortoti said that thanks to a 32 percent increase in gold production last year, Ghana has once again become Africa’s largest gold producer. Known historically as the “Bay of Gold,” Ghana is among the continent’s largest gold producers, along with the Republic of South Africa.
