UNICEF: Number of displaced children reaches 43.3 million

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported that the number of displaced children reached 43.3 million by the end of 2022. UNICEF published a report on displaced children around the world. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated, "The increase in the number of displaced children is related to conflicts, crises and disasters caused by climate change around the world." The report drew attention to the fact that most displaced children spend their entire childhood this way, and said, "The number of children forcibly displaced has doubled in the last 10 years." The report stated that the war in Ukraine forcibly displaced 2 million children from their country, and 1 million children were also displaced within the country. The report reported that 60 percent of 43.3 million children were displaced as a result of conflict and violence, and the number of children seeking asylum reached 17.5 million. The report stated that 940 thousand children have currently been displaced due to the conflict in Sudan, and that extreme weather events have also displaced millions of children.
