Twitter Threatens to Sue Meta Over Threads

Twitter has reportedly warned of legal action against Meta over its new text-based social media platform Threads. News site Semafor has published a letter from Twitter attorney Alex Spiro to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In the letter, Spiro expressed serious concerns that Meta is systematically, intentionally, and unlawfully misappropriating Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property. Pointing out that Meta hired two former Twitter employees last year, Spiro alleged that the company intentionally tasked these employees with developing a “copycat” Meta app Threads over a period of months. “Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any of Twitter’s trade secrets or highly confidential information,” Spiro said. Twitter’s attorney noted that the social media company reserves all rights, including but not limited to the right to seek both legal and injunctive relief without further notice to prevent further use of its intellectual property by Meta. Threads Reaches 30 Million Users Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on his Threads account that the number of people who registered for Threads reached 30 million as of this morning. Zuckerberg said, "It feels like the start of something special, but we have a lot of work ahead of us to improve the app." Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, launched its new social media platform Threads, a rival to Twitter, yesterday. Zuckerberg had previously been criticized for copying Snapchat and TikTok features on Instagram under the names "Stories" and "Reels."
