France plans to restart coal-fired power plant in Lorraine this winter

The French Energy Ministry said the government could restart a coal-fired power plant in the Lorraine region of northern France this winter. "As a precaution, we reserve the option to reactivate the Saint Avold plant if necessary this winter, given the situation in Ukraine," the ministry said in a written statement yesterday. The ministry said the plan would not affect France's gradual phase-out of coal, adding that the operator would compensate for the emissions with measures such as afforestation.
