Apple is shifting its chip supply direction

Apple is preparing to source chips for its devices from a factory under construction in Arizona in the United States, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday. The report, which attributed comments made by CEO Tim Cook at an internal meeting with local engineering and retail employees in Germany, said the company could also expand its supply of chips from factories in Europe. According to the report, Cook was referring to an Arizona factory likely to be operated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world’s largest contract chip maker and a major supplier to Apple. Last year, TSMC said it had begun construction on a facility in Arizona where it planned to spend $12 billion to build a computer chip factory and to begin manufacturing chips using its 5-nanometer manufacturing technology in 2024. Earlier this month, TSMC also said it was building a building in Arizona that could serve as its second chip factory. The United States has been encouraging foreign technology firms to establish manufacturing in the country and has been actively supporting local research, development and manufacturing after passing the CHIPS Act.
