Harris narrows gap to 1 point over Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris has narrowed her lead over Donald Trump to 1 percentage point, according to a poll conducted after President Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy for the November election. The latest New York Times/Siena College poll found that a majority of Democratic voters support Harris as the likely nominee days after Biden’s withdrawal, with only 14% preferring another candidate. An overwhelming 70% of Democratic voters said they wanted the party to unite behind him quickly rather than embark on a more competitive and lengthy process. Democrats have been divided by Biden’s health, and Trump has gained a significant advantage in the polls. Harris now has 93% support among Democrats, the same level of support Trump has among Republicans. Overall, Trump is ahead of Harris among likely voters, 47% to 48%. In a Times/Siena poll conducted in early July, Biden was 6 percentage points behind Trump. Among registered voters, Trump has 48 percent support and Harris has 46 percent support. Meanwhile, Harris said she is ready to face Trump on television on September 10. Trump's campaign said Harris' candidacy needs to be confirmed in order to set a date.
