Spotify begins selling concert tickets

Spotify has started selling tickets to live music events on its new website. The new site allows users to buy tickets directly from Spotify, without redirecting to other platforms that sell tickets. The company’s new website lists upcoming concerts and allows users to purchase tickets for those shows with a debit or credit card. Spotify, one of the leading brands in the online music and podcast market, has started selling tickets to live music events on its new website. Spotify plans to better leverage its extensive user data. Instead of directing users to partners like Ticketmaster and Eventbrite, Spotify has launched a new site to sell live concert tickets directly to fans from its platform. The company’s new website lists upcoming concerts and allows users to purchase tickets for those shows with a debit or credit card; users must have a Spotify account to purchase tickets. Sam Sheridan, Spotify’s Product Manager for Events, said in a blog post in June that people are leaving the platform to find events for their live performances while interacting with artists on the app. With its revamped live event streaming and ticketing platform, the company aims to solve the discovery problem and generate revenue through ticket bookings, either directly or as an affiliate. Last year, the company also tried selling tickets to pre-recorded virtual concerts due to the pandemic. The company has been under constant scrutiny for not paying artists enough from streaming, so with this new initiative, Spotify could argue that it will drive more ticket sales for artists.
