Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer stated in an interview with the German automobile magazine Automobilwoche that the German manufacturer does not plan to develop a new generation internal combustion engine for the Golf model, which has been on sale since 1974. Stating that the new generation Golf is planned for 10 years, Schaefer said, "Then we need to see how this segment develops. If the world develops in a completely different way than expected by 2026 or 2027, we could develop a completely new vehicle. But I don't think it will happen. That is not expected so far." Stating that the Golf name will be retained for an electric model of Volkswagen, Schaefer said, "It is clear that we will not give up iconic names such as Golf, Tiguan and GTI, we will transfer them to the world of electric cars." The Golf 8, which is currently in production after Volkswagen decided not to invest in renewing the engine of the Golf, Europe’s best-selling car, will be the last internal combustion engine version of the hatchback. Meanwhile, the Volkswagen brand plans to launch 10 new electric models by 2026, including an entry-level model that the carmaker wants to sell for less than 25,000 euros.
