US Treasury Secretary Yellen to Visit China

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will travel to China this week to meet with senior officials. The US Treasury Department announced that Yellen will visit Beijing, the capital of China, on July 6-9. The statement recalled that Yellen’s visit to China follows US President Joe Biden’s meeting with President Xi Jinping in November to deepen communication between the US and China on a number of issues, including the global economy and financial developments. The statement noted that Yellen will discuss with Chinese officials the importance of responsible management of relations between the world’s two largest economies, direct communication on areas of concern, and working together to address global challenges. The statement emphasized that the US, together with its allies, strives to secure national security interests and protect human rights through targeted actions that do not seek economic advantage, and that they seek a healthy economic relationship with China that fosters mutually beneficial growth and innovation and expands economic opportunities for American workers and businesses. The statement also conveyed that efforts are being made to cooperate on global issues such as climate change and debt distress.
